As you probably know, there are a number of huge problems with conventional fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) that we've relied on to power our societies since the Industrial Revolution.
On the one hand, they are running out: some analysts believe that we have already reached peak oil and that global production will decline more or less from here on out. And while there is considerably more coal and natural gas, they are still extremely finite resources, and experts can already foresee the "peak" of coal and gas as well. Second, the burning of fossil fuels emits both particulate pollutants and greenhouse gases. The former is choking cities around the world with smog, and the latter contributes to the climate crisis: These heat-trapping byproducts of fossil fuels are the biggest contributors to global warming.
The race has therefore begun to replace them with a source of energy of the future. Clearly, these are not fossil fuels. But unfortunately, it is unlikely that a single energy source will emerge to definitively replace hydrocarbons. There is no "free energy", nor a magic formula.
Instead, the energy of the future will have to be generated by a patchwork of renewable sources: wind, solar, geoherman hydroelectric and, yes, nuclear power, will likely play a role in generating tomorrow's electricity.
